Description

Prior and convent of Ely.
Addressees
Council.
Nature of request
The prior and convent of convent of Ely request remedy against Greenlaw, Marsh, James and Cully of Haddenham. The king's progenitors where seised from time of memory of £250 10s ½d of recognisances of the free and customary tenants of the bishopric of Ely in times of vacancy of the same bishopric, which King Edward by his letters patent granted to the prior's predecessor and the convent forever, rendering to the king and his heirs £2000 every year that the bishopric is vacant. When the said prior wished to levy £8 from the customary tenants of Haddenham for the last vacancy, two hundred men came against them with force and arms on 28 April 1426 led by Greenlaw, Marsh, James and Cully and rang the common bell of the vill, and when John Prior came to Haddenham bearing a letter from the duke of Exeter commanding Greenlaw to cease all riots, they imprisoned him for a day and night and took 6s 2d from his purse and treated him badly, so that the prior and his ministers won't come to Haddenham to levy the said £8, for fear of their lives.
