Reference
SC 8/164/8173
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Executors of John de Hastinges (Hastings).
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
After the death of Hastings, Despenser took all his chattels in all his manors in England and Wales, worth over £700, and also owes him £1000 by recognizance made in Chancery. In this parliament the executors sued to have remedy but have only been granted Hastings' chattels that still remain in the manors that are ransacked and scarcely amount to anything. The executors now request:1) the chattels, debts and arrears of Despenser in the manors which are also ransacked.2) that grace be done in the matter of Hastings' will which was altered.
Nature of endorsement
For the lands in England, let writs be sent to the sheriffs of the places, and for the lands in Wales, to the escheator of the parts, that they may inquire into what goods Hastings had in the manors at the time of his death, and of their value; and if they came to the hands of Despenser, and what goods belonging to him are now in the manors, and of their value etc. And when the inquisitions have been returned into the Exchequer, let recompense be made to the executors for the goods which belonged to Hastings, and which came into the hands of Despenser, from the goods which belonged to Despenser and are now in the manors, in so far as they shall suffice.
Places mentioned
Wales.
People mentioned
John de Hastinges (Hastings)
Hugh le Despenser, the son.
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1327, with reference to SC 8/51/2508, a 1328 copy of a writ of Edward III to Richard de Chilton, resulting from an inquisition held by this petition, which must therefore precede the writ. John de Hastings died in 1325 with Hugh le Despenser having wardship of his infant son.
