Description
Petitioners
Thomas de la Lok of Bray.
Name(s)
de la Lok, Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
By the charter of King John la Lok held a farm of one custom levied from ships passing by Bray in the River Thames, namely 6s. from every ship laden with wood (for which farm he pays 5 marks annually to the king's exchequer), but since so many of the said ships are in the King's name he cannot levy his farm from them. La Lok requests that he be allowed to collect his farm from such ships.
Nature of endorsement
Let the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer hear la Lok's complaint and if people claim their ships laden with wood are the King's when they are not and thus avoid the custom, they should make those people come before them and do justice.
Places mentioned
Bray, [Berkshire]
River Thames.
People mentioned
John, King of England.
Note
No firm context has been established for this petition, which is assigned impressionistically, on the basis of the hand and the use of Latin in the endorsement, to the first quarter of the fourteenth century.
