Description

Addressees

Occupation
Abbot of Bec Hellouin
Nature of request
The abbot of Bec requests justices be assigned to enquire into the manner in which the villeins of Ogbourne hold their land and by what services, because the same villeins, who are tallagable and owe him certain services and customs which are attached to their lands from time of memory, will not give him rents, services or customs to the great damage of the abbey and of the King in times of vacancy of the abbey.
Nature of endorsement
Because the matters contained in the petition are in impairment of the peace and affray of the people and also to the damage of the King and his heirs, certain men should be assigned to enquire into the matter, and into their resistance if any was made and into any other necessary points, and the inquest returned in Chancery. And if they are villeins of the abbot and have made resistance, then the abbot shall have the help of the King and his court to bring justice to his said villeins as their lord.
