1) Wake shows that William de Stuteville his ancestor was granted Knaresborough and Boroughbridge by Henry II, which gift was confirmed by successive kings to Stuteville and his son Robert. On Robert's death without issue when the lands descended to Nicholas de Stuteville, King John seized the lands into his own hands depriving him of his inheritance. Eventually King John returned all his inheritance in Normandy and England except Knaresborough and Boroughbridge. The estate then passed successively to Joan de Stuteville, Baldwin Wake, John Wake and then to the petitioner who requests remedy.2) Wake requests remedy for his father's manors of Ware valued annually at £117 9s. and held in sokage of the heirs of the earl of Winchester and Kirkby Moorside valued annually at £61 162. 9d. and held in sokage of John de Mowbray, which the king seized after the death of Wake's mother Joan and held for 7½ years while Thomas was a ward and received the issues of the same.3) Wake requests remedy, since after the death of his mother, the king seized all his father's lands and held them for 7½ years, during which time the manor of Lidell worth £700 annually and the manor of ... worth £300 were seized and destroyed and came into the hands of the Scots who held them so that Wake had no profit from them. During the same time the manor of Marton in Westmorland worth £100 annually was so destroyed by the Scots that he has lost £1100.4) Wake requests an inquiry into his houses and gardens in the manors of Cottingham, East Witton, Kirkby Moorside, Cropton, Ayton and Hemlington in Yorkshire, Kelby, Bourne and Deeping in Lincolnshire, Stevington and Ware in Bedfordshire [sic] and Wakes Colne in Essex which were ruined and destroyed while in the king's keeping for 7½ years with damages amounting to 1000 marks.1)
