Description
Petitioners
John de Causton (Cawston) of London.
Name(s)
de Causton (Cawston), John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John de Causton requests:1) Remedy for £18 6s 8¼d which Hedersete and other customers of wool in London took from him in 1317-18, beyond what he owed for wool which he and Colnham caused to be carried overseas, as a loan to the king, to be paid from the debts due from him to the Exchequer for the time when he was a sheriff of London. Also for [£8 14s 4½d] as appears by the customs account returned in the Exchequer.2) Remedy for five pieces of striped cloth taken from his stall at Boston fair in 1314-15 by Dengayn, former ulnager of Edward II, which were later found in the Exchequer to be of the assize and worth 22½ marks. Dengayn died before Causton received his recovery.3) 25 marks which Edward I owed Abingdon, late husband of Causton's wife Eve, for cloth taken from him by Ralph de Stokes in 1303, 1305 and 1306, for which Causton has the bills.1)
Nature of endorsement
The first point of the first petition should be presented in Chancery and the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer ordered to determine if the king owes the said £18 6s 8¼d and to make allowance for the same. The second point of the first petition should be presented in Chancery and a similar writ to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer to have the allowance of £8 14s 4½d.2) Regarding the second petition, the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer should review the process between Causton and Dengayn and if they find the cloth to be of the stated value, to make allowance to Causton for the same amount.3) Regarding the third petition, the will should be presented in Chancery if Eve has recognisance as is supposed in the petition, allowance should be made.
