SC 8/162/8089
Date
[c. 1350]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Ughtred, knight.
Name(s)
de Ughtred, Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Ughtred requests that a punishment be ordained for Hessay so that others will be warned of the consequences for those who ignore the orders of the king. Ughtred commanded his valet to take the protection granted by the king to the abbot and convent of St Mary to York castle to be heard in full court, but when this was done Hessay would not allow it to be heard without a writ in contempt of the king, and commanded the commons of the city not to sell or allow anyone to carry victuals to the abbey.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Abbey of Our Lady, York (St Mary's, York)
York.
People mentioned
Abbot and convent of Our Lady, York (St Mary's, York)
Hammond de Hessay, under-sheriff of York.
Note
The petition has been dated to c. 1350 as it seems that the petition is yet another stage in the dispute between St Mary's abbey and the mayor and community of York over the borough and liberties of Bootham, and probably follows on from the king's taking of the borough into his protection on 20 April 1350, Ughtred being appointed one of the keepers of the borough (CPR 1348-50, p.497).
