Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/162/8086
Date
[1323-1325]
Description
Petitioners
Roger de Somervill.
Name(s)
de Somervill, Roger
Addressees
Council.
Nature of request
Somervill requests allowance for the sum that he used to receive from the bailiwick of Strafforth which has all times been in the hand of the sheriffs who have used to take 40 marks each year towards the payment of the farm, but it has now been granted to Wasteneys for life rendering £10 annually and Somervill has a loss of 25 marks to the destruction of the other wapentakes.
Nature of endorsement
He should have a writ in Chancery to the treasurer and barons etc. containing the effect of the petition, that they should enquire of the contents and return the inquisition into the Exchequer and do justice to the plaintiff.
Places mentioned
Strafforth wapentake, [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Edmund de Wastenays.
Note
The petition at first glance would appear to date to c. 1311-c. 1316 on the basis of life grants of the bailiwick made to Wasteneys on 26 May 1311 and 24 November 1316 (CFR 1307-19, pp.94, 312-13). However, the petition would only seem to make sense if the petitioner was sheriff of Yorkshire, and he held the office from June 1323 to February 1325, so that it seems safer to date the petition to 1323-1325.
