Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/162/8074
Date
[c. 1330]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Veer (Vere), earl of Oxford.
Name(s)
de Veer (Vere), earl of Oxford, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Veer requests remedy and that his charters and muniments concerning the office of lord chamberlain be considered as Henry I granted the office of lord chamberlain to his ancestors, which successive kings confirmed, but Henry III ousted Veer's father without award or judgment. Veer has sued from parliament to parliament for remedy.1)
Nature of endorsement
He should come before the council, and show his acts and muniments.2) Afterwards he showed before them one charter of king Henry, and because this thing touches the king especially let this matter be sent to the king and his great council.3) Let the petition be sent into Chancery, and let the chancellor take the justices and other wise members of the council and ordain a remedy in this case.
People mentioned
Henry I, King of England
Aubrey de Veer (Vere)
Henry III, King of England
Robert de Veer (Vere), earl of Oxford, father of the petitioner.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1330 as the petition refers to Henry III as great-grandfather of the petitioner, and it is clear from SC 8/16/754, a petition on the same matter by the petitioner's son and dating to 1331, that this petition initiated action terminated by the petitioner's death in 1331. It is unlikely that actions that were ongoing in 1330-1 would be significantly after the presentation of the petition.
