Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/161/8040
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
John de Bekyngham (Beckingham) of Reedness; Joan de Bekyngham (Beckingham), wife of John de Beckingham.
Name(s)
de Bekyngham (Beckingham); de Bekyngham (Beckingham), John; Joan
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Bekynghams request remedy as they held 20 acres of moor in Reedness that Joan's ancestors had held since the Conquest until they were disseised by the earl of Lincoln, who also by duress and distraint levied rent from them though they did not hold any land of the earl. The land has now come into the king's hand and the earl's daughter and heir has released her claims.1)
Nature of endorsement
Certain people are to be assigned in Chancery to enquire in the presence of the keeper of the manor of the estate that Thomas had in the lands, and when and how the lands came into the hand of Lacy, and when it came into the king's hand, and of all other circumstances that concern it, and it is to be returned into Chancery and the king certified.2) Concerning the rent exacted and distrained from him, he should have delivery at the common law.
Places mentioned
Reedness, [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Thomas de Bertvill (Bertville), father of Joan de Beckingham
Henry de Lacy, earl of Lincoln
Alice [de Lacy], daughter and heir of Henry de Lacy.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1330 as the petition is clearly after the fall of Thomas of Lancaster when the inheritance of the Lincoln lands forfeited to the crown. The petition refers to the lands coming into the hand of the king's father, thus suggesting a date early in the reign of Edward III.
