Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/161/8003
Date
[c. 1327-c. 1340]
Description
Petitioners
Henry de Rydeford (Redford); Joan de Rydeford (Redford), wife of Henry de Rydeford.
Name(s)
de Rydeford (Redford); de Rydeford (Redford), Henry; Joan
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Rydefords request that a writ be sent to the chancellor to command a writ to the justices hearing their suit against Malemeyns to proceed in the plea, notwithstanding that Malemeyns made the king a party to the plea. The Rydefords have sued a writ of escheat against Malemeyns for land in Rothwell which was formerly John de Rothewell's which he held of Malet, and following Rothewell's forfeiture for felony, the same should have reverted to Joan de Rydeford as granddaughter and heir of Malet. Malemeyns has pleaded that he holds the same of the king and cannot answer without him, and the justices will not proceed.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the justices by writ of Chancery that they proceed in the process, but should not go to judgment without consulting the king.
Places mentioned
Rothewell, [Lincolnshire].
People mentioned
Nicholas Malemeyns, knight
John de Rothewell (Rothwell)
John Malet, grandfather of Joan de Rydeford.
Note
The petition is speculatively dated to c. 1327-c. 1340 on the basis of the hand. The petition refers to a gift made by the king's grandfather, and this makes most sense if the petition refers back to Edward I's reign.
