The opinion of George Wood, judge (Baron of the Exchequer) on Robert Haworth, indicted at the Lancashire Assizes in August 1819 for having three forged £1 notes in his possession. The case was brought by the Bank of England and the prisoner was acquitted. However, he had been caught with seven £1 notes on him when he was taken and the bank were now proceeding against him with the fourth note. The judge was amazed at this 'this was the most extraordinary proceeding on the part of the Bank of England he [I] have ever Witnessed... [and] which by no means ought to receive any encouragement'. Furthermore 'a Man might be tried twenty times for the same offence'. The prisoner was acquitted.
