4 items (originally enclosed with correspondence relating to the proposed laying of a telegraph cable under the Pacific Ocean) extracted from CO 885/6/17. North Pacific Ocean: Hawaiian Islands: Necker Bank. 4 sheets of maps and sketches. (1) Chart of Necker Bank showing soundings. Scale: 1 inch to 1 sea mile. Compass indicator. Soundings taken by HMS Champion, September 1894. Signed: Lieutenant Roland Nugent, Royal Navy; approved by Captain E Rooke. (2) Map of Necker Island showing soundings. Scale: 8 inches to about 5 cables. Compass indicator. Surveyed by Lieutenants R Nugent and F H Walter, and Midshipmen O J Prentis and R M T Stephens; some soundings taken by Midshipmen F H Mitchell, F A Rooke, R M G Knight and H H Smith; printed by Wyman and Sons, 1894. Signed: Lieutenant Nugent, approved by Captain Rooke. (3) Sheet bearing 6 views of Necker Island. Printed by Wyman and Sons. Approved by Captain Rooke, September 1894. (4) Sheet bearing a 2 plans and 2 sections of Iwalani Island showing soundings. Scale: 1 inch to 10 cables (1 plan); 1 inch to 1 mile [1:63360] (remainder). Compass indicator. Reduced from the Hawaiian Government Survey by S E Bishop, 23 July 1885; soundings taken by HMS Hyacinth, 14 October 1894. Signed: Staff Commander Frank J Harwood; approved by Captain H G May.
