Files from the Home Office VAR series, which was used for subjects which are not covered by other symbol series; subjects include burial removal licences, missing persons and divisional progress reports.
The subjects covered by VAR originally formed part of the remit of E4 Division, which was part of the General Department of the Home Office - amongst other issues the Department deals with are charity law, church matters, entertainment, human rights, liquor licensing, local acts, missing persons, privacy laws, private bills and some byelaws relating to pedlars, protection of animals and birds, shops laws and vivisection. The VAR series is presently dealt with by C5 Division, which deals mostly with drugs issues and which forms part of the Criminal Justice and Constitutional Department.
The files selected deal mainly with internal divisional progress reports, and also with the various statutory licences issued by local authorities.
The papers in this series are arranged by departmental file number. The inclusion of a date after a file number (as in VAR 3/1/1(66)) indicates the year in which the file is supposed to have been created, but often it only indicates the year in which the first subfile was raised on a particular subject.
