Description

Folios 361-362. Letter to Robert Mackreth, MP for Ashburton, Devon, from William Sunter, magistrate, of Ashburton:

  • telling him that 300 French prisoners are on parole in Ashburton and it is rumoured that this will increase to 500;
  • stating that there are insufficient provisions for the inhabitants and that no cattle are fit for slaughter;
  • requesting that the Admiralty be approached with a view to moving some prisoners to other towns further from the coast;
  • relating an incident where Sunter had intervened in the market to the extent of 4d a bushel so that farmers could sell potatoes to the soldiery and the poor at a reduced price, and he was then threatened with his life if he did it again.
Sunter reports that the principal inhabitants had decided to buy some of the foreign corn to be disposed of at Plymouth and had sent 2 overseers of the poor to buy some. They, in common with the overseers of many parishes, had returned with none on account of the activities of a cartel of millers. Endorsed that extracts sent to Mr Nepean at the Admiralty and Mr Long of the Treasury.
