Folios 162-163. Letter from Giles Duxbury, overseer of Prestwich, to the Poor Law Commissioners. Prestwich being taken into Manchester Poor Law Union has rendered the workhouse useless for the purpose for which it was intended. Money was borrowed from individuals within the town to build the house and mortgage deed granted interest and part of the principal to be paid annually out of the rates. There remains a debt of £600 on the building and the town is anxious to know how this debt is to be liquidated and how the interest is to be paid. The furniture and fixtures having been sold, the amount may be appropriated in part payment for this purpose
