Folios 146-147. Letter from Edwin Chadwick, secretary to the Poor Law Commissioners, to Ner Gardiner, clerk to Manchester Board of Guardians, regarding the case of Margaret Goldsmith and legal opinion of magistrate Daniel Maude. The Commissioners have stated their opinion on the case, that their own conclusions do not necessarily have to be adopted, while some magistrates have views that may agree with those of Daniel Maude. They do not see how the case, having once been heard, can transfer to the higher court, while a mandamus cannot compel justices to come to any particular conclusion
