Memorial by or on behalf of the elector of Mainz: he has been informed that Maillesbois and his army are about to leave Westphalia, and may lay siege to Mainz. Consequently the British and Austrian ministers have decided to offer him troops sufficient for a garrison. He acknowledges his obligations to the emperor but affirms his neutrality in the question of the Austrian succession, and will accept the offer should the French move against him. It was for this reason that the king of Great Britain positioned the 6,000 Hessians in the neighbourhood. He encloses a memorial on the state of the fortress. ff. 23-26
