Description (What the record is about)
-
Duplicate translation from the Spanish to the Admiralty. Peter Torres, Havana. The Prince Henry, Captain Richard Jasper, arrived here in October in bad weather and was left in my care to be careened. The Captain prevented me from completing the repairs to my satisfaction and delayed the work by having the partitions in his cabin removed to accommodate a lady he called his wife. Has since the repair been informed by one of the ship's crew that the Captain intended to charge more for her careening for his own advantage. The Captain also asked the journeymen and labourers who careened the ship to sign their names to a blank page in a house outside the Yard. They also came to my apartment with the Clerk of the ship and Richard Creagh, a native of Ireland, his interpreter. The Captain required a certificate of the works to be signed by me but in English and offered a gratuity for careening the ship
