Description

Reports sending a ship to Philadelphia to buy food. Explains that the food was needed for: ships being armed as cruisers, expected additional soldiers, workman and labourers employed for public works, and also for the poor of the island who would not be able to afford food if there was a war and the prices rose. Items to be purchased included:

  • 500 barrels of flour each containing 196 lbs,
  • 300 barrels of pork each containing 200 lbs,
  • 52 puncheons [large casks] of rum each containing 108 gallons,
  • One cask of vinegar containing 100 gallons for the hospital, and
  • 1000 bushels of Indian Corn 'for the use of the Negro labourers in lieu of flour'.

Also reports that merchants who lent money for the use of the government were not receiving payment for their bills from the Treasury on time.
