Instructions for Colonel Clavering: the king has decided to send him to the court of the landgrave of Hesse. He is to repair first to the headquarters of Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick to learn more about the landgrave and his ministers. He is then to proceed to wherever the landgrave may be and present his letters of credence. He is to promote harmony and understanding between the two courts and cultivate Messrs. Hardenberg and Donop. He is to observe the designs of foreign powers at the court and see whether the landgrave is under the influence of any Roman Catholic priests. ff. 1-3
