Description

Petition of Mr Gibbs and about 390 others complaining of the maladministration of the government of the colony by President Forth. With related correspondence, much of which concerns claims that the petition is invalid since it includes names of individuals who have since said that they did not sign it, who are under the age of 16, who are known to be illiterate, or who have no 'pretensions to respectability'. Lists are included of those named in the petition with their occupations, including 50 'African Laborers ... who have been liberated from the Slave Ship [sic] since 1837'. Also with printed copies of the address of President Forth on the opening of the 1851 session of the Legislative Council and the Council's reply, and an extract from the Royal Gazette of 17 September 1851. Charles Edward Grey, Governor of Jamaica, Turks & Caicos No. 41, folios 3-156
