Seditious newspapers: reports on powers of the government to deal with imports of such publications in response to a specific query about a Muscat newspaper, Ghudar, sent to Sowar Ram Narain Sharma at New Amsterdam. States that 'Sharma is a public danger a"déclassé" (with some brains) but with the prestige of a high Brahmin family', and asks for advice on the possibility of introducing legislation to enable the deportation of 'undesirable' residents. Refers also to another newspaper, Bande Mataram, printed at Geneva, copies of which had been sent to Sharma, but intercepted, read and destroyed by the Postmaster General as in his opinion being of a 'grossly offensive character'.
Walter Egerton, Governor of British Guiana, unnumbered secret despatch, folios 307-319
