Reference
SC 8/158/7899
Date
[? 1430-? 1445]
Description
Petitioners
Clerks, pilgrims and merchants of England.
Addressees
King and the lords of his great council.
Nature of request
The petitioners request that the wardens of Calais be summoned before the council to answer for the charges they make on the passage between Dover and Calais against the ancient custom, and for the poor care of those making the passage.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Dover, [Kent]
Calais, [France]
Sandwich, [Kent].
People mentioned
Richard Veer (Vere), warden of Calais
John Sprot, warden of Calais
Simon Sutton, warden of Calais
John Heyward, warden of Calais.
Note
The petition has been dated to? 1430-? 1445. The matter of the passage from Dover to Calais was current from 1440-1464 (CPR 1436-41, pp.392-3; CPR 1446-52, pp.427-8; Rot. Parl., vol. V::p.568a-b (no.x)). However the petition may be earlier as Sprott witnessed a charter of September 1429 at Calais (CCR 1429-35, p.322), and Veer was one of the merchants of the Calais staple recorded in the patent rolls of 1426 (CPR 1422-9, pp.348-9). As the petition is in English a date of c. 1440 is perhaps closer to the mark.
