Nature of request
John de Berkele requests remedy in his dispute with Sir Thomas Berkeley, who has used his lordship and his office as keeper of the peace in Gloucestershire to pursue the petitioner, and against whom there is no relief at law since the sheriffs, bailiffs and other ministers of the county are all in receipt of his robes and fees and because he has recently, through the assistance of Sir Roger Mortimer, purchased the franchise of return of writs in Berkeley hundred.

Let the roll of chancery be viewed. And let this petition be sent before the prelates, earls and barons assigned to survey and examine the grants made by the king.

Dated c. 1330-c. 1331 by Saul, Knights and Esquires, p. 266 (no. 2). The dispute between the two families was certainly current in 1332 when Thomas de Berkeley was making complaints against John de Berkeley (CPR 1330-4, p.354).
