Reference
SC 8/157/7830
Date
[1327-1337]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Stanley.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The abbot and convent request remedy as they have long petitioned for the manor of Berwick Basset of which they were enfeoffed by Philip Basset until they were disseised by Despenser, and although le Scrope held an inquisition into this, he would not proceed without the king's counsel.
Nature of endorsement
Let Geoffrey le Scrope be ordered to have the record before the king in Chancery in the quinzene of Easter, and let the record be examined in the same place, and let what is considered to be done be done.
Places mentioned
York
Northampton, [Northamptonshire]
Winchester, [Hampshire]
Westminster
Stanley, [Wiltshire]
Berwick Basset, Wiltshire.
People mentioned
Hugh le Despenser, the younger.
Note
The petition appears to date to the period 1327 to 1337 as the petition is clearly of the early years of Edward III's reign and complain of the actions of one of the Despensers, and as the justices were ordered to proceed to judgment on 18 October 1337 (CCR 1337-9, p.193). It is not entirely clear where this petition fits into this chronology.
