Reference
SC 8/157/7826
Date
[c. 1324]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Chytecrofte, son of Richard de Chytecrofte; John de Chytecrofte, son of Richard de Chytecrofte.
Name(s)
de Chytecrofte; de Chytecrofte, Thomas; John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Chytecroftes request that they be granted the lands of their kinsman Thomas de Chytecrofte which were taken into the king's hand because he was an adherent of Badlesmere in the quarrel of the earl of Lancaster.
Nature of endorsement
The reason for the taking of the lands into the king's hand should be considered in Chancery, and if it is found that it was because of the quarrel then the right heirs of Chytecrofte are to be restored by process in Chancery.
Places mentioned
Lamberhurst, Kent.
People mentioned
Thomas de Chytecrofte
Bartholomew de Badlesmere
[Thomas of Lancaster], earl of Lancaster.
Note
The petition clearly dates to after 1322 as it refers to the quarrel with Thomas of Lancaster, and to Bartholomew de Badlesmere. An inquisition into lands jointly held by Richard de Chytecrofte and his wife in August 1324, and the order to deliver these lands on 2 October 1325 suggest that the petition should be contemporary with these (CIM 1307-49, no.832; CCR 1323-7, p.406). As Thomas Chytecrofte, one of the petitioners seems to have been dead by early 1327, it seems unlikely that this petition dates to the change of regime at that time (CFR 1327-37, p.13; CPR 1327-30, p.37).
