Reference
SC 8/157/7823
Date
[? 1299]
Description
Petitioners
People and tenants of Ravenser Odd.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people and tenants request that their town be made a free borough with all the liberties pertaining to such boroughs.[There is a clause at the bottom that is not entirely legible which seems to refer to the king ordering that the matter be examined by the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer, and the justices, and what they find to be sent to the king under the seal of the Exchequer].
Nature of endorsement
At the Exchequer before the treasurer and barons.
Places mentioned
Ravenser Odd, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
York.
Note
The petition probably dates to 1299 as the charter was granted on 1 April 1299 (CChR 1257-1300, p.476). However, there are other similar petitions by the same petitioners, and it is not clear whether these are contemporary, and whether the charter was issued in response to this particular petition.
