Reference
SC 8/157/7813
Date
[1327]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Scarborough.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The burgesses request that the certification relating to their farm made by the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer be viewed and that they can have an allowance in their next farm as the king's father seized the town and the manor of Falsgrave and levied grievous sums from them beyond their farm without cause as this certification shows.
Nature of endorsement
Let the certification be sent to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer, and let them be commanded by writ to call before them William de Clif and others with knowledge of this business, and if they find the town was taken into the king's hand for a just reason then they should stay their suit, and if they find it was unjustly seized then they should make allowance at their discretion.
Places mentioned
Scarborough, [North Riding of Yorkshire]
Falsgrave, [North Riding of Yorkshire]
York.
People mentioned
Edward II, King of England
William de Clif (Cliff).
Note
The petition seems to date to 1327 when the manor of Falsgrave was restored to the burgesses (CCR 1327-30, p.32).
