Name(s)
de Casterton; de Casterton, Richard; Isabel
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Castertons request remedy as Matthew de Casterton gave the manor of Layham to his son with remainder to Joan his daughter, and when Joan obtained seisin she exchanged the manor with Despenser for Lamarsh and Wakes Colne, but he obstructed her in entering these manors and in re-entering Layham, and held the manors with his son so that it was not known which held them.
Nature of endorsement
Let this petition be sent to Chancery, and there they should so the deed of the first and the deed of the exchange and other things, and let right and reason be done.
Places mentioned
Layham, [Suffolk]
Lamarsh, [Essex]
Wakes Colne, [Essex].
People mentioned
Matthew de Leigham (Layham), great-grandfather of Isabel de Casterton
Peter [de Leigham (Layham)], son of Matthew de Leigham
Joan [de Leigham (Layham)], sister of Peter de Leigham
Hugh le Despenser, the father
Hugh le Despenser, the son.
Note
The petition probably dates to 1327 or shortly thereafter as the petition makes reference to the actions of the elder Despenser. However, the petition is strange as it does not make mention of the manors being in the king's hand by the forfeiture of the Despensers, a common reference in petitions after the fall of Edward II and the Despensers, so it is possible that the petition was actually made in the reign of Edward II.
