SC 8/156/7776
Date
[1327]
Description
Petitioners
John de Neville.
Name(s)
de Neville, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Neville requests the repayment of the £50 that he has paid for his fine because he was of the earl of Lancaster's part in the quarrel, and he requests that he be discharged of the £500 that remains in arrears.
Nature of endorsement
Let the petition be delivered into Chancery, and let the chancellor inform himself of the cause of the making of the ransom, and if it is found that it was made because of the quarrel with the earl of Lancaster then let it be annulled in the rolls of Chancery if it be there, and let it be ordered to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer to annul it. And if it is made elsewhere a writ is to be sent to annul it wherever it is.
People mentioned
Thomas [of Lancaster], Earl of Lancaster.
Note
The petition is clearly of 1327 as it unlikely that any rebel would ask for repayment of parts of a fine, and a discharge from the remainder while Edward II was still on the throne, and this is borne out by the discharge granted to the petitioner and others on 14 February 1327 (CCR 1327-30, p.21).
