The petition has been tentatively dated to 1388-1400 on the reference to service in Portugal which is likely to be a reference to the campaigns of John of Gaunt and Edmund of Langley from 1380 until Gaunt gave up his claims to the throne of Castile in 1388, though the petition may be somewhat later than these events (Goodman, A., John of Gaunt, (1992), pp.111-113; Saul, N., Richard II, (1997), pp.55, 96-9, 148-51).
