Description

Abbot and convent of Selby.

Nature of request
The abbot and convent request that certain people be assigned to enquire of their right in moorland, pasture and rent in Rawcliffe and Eastoft, and that a remedy be ordained for them. They were disseised of the same by the earl of Lincoln, and they came into the king's hand by the earl of Lancaster's forfeiture, but the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer would not receive the verdict of an inquisition ordered following an earlier petition.
Nature of endorsement
Scrope, Herle and Denum are to be assigned to enquire by the oaths of law-worthy men of the contents in the petition; and let it be ordered to them that they go to the place; and let it be ordered to Deyville . . .

Esshtoft (Eastoft), [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned

Thomas [of Lancaster], earl of Lancaster

Thomas Deyville, keeper of forfeited lands.
Note
The petition is dated to 1324 as commission to Scrope and the others to hold the inquisition dates to 14 June 1324, though strangely the inquisition was not held until 15 January 1326, and the actual order to restore the land was not given until 9 February 1327 (CIM 1307-49, no.911; CCR 1327-30, p.8).
