Reference
SC 8/155/7720
Date
[c. 1328-c. 1340]
Description
Petitioners
People of the manor of Cowick.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[The petition is damaged, faint and dirty and the full sense is difficult to discern].The people complain that enclosures relating to the park of Cowick prevent them from getting to their fields.
Nature of endorsement
Let good people be assigned to enquire in the presence of the bailiff of the things contained in this petition, and let the inquisition be returned into [Chancery].
Places mentioned
Couwyk (Cowick), [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Philippa [of Hainault], Queen of England.
Note
The petition is dated speculatively to c. 1330-c. 1340 as the petition makes reference to Queen Philippa, and the hand of the petition suggests a date earlier in the reign of Edward III. Cowick was held by Queen Isabella in 1329. The note on the guard relating the petition to Feckenham in Worcestershire is clearly in error.
