Reference
SC 8/154/7682
Date
[? 1356]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Burle (Burley).
Name(s)
de Burle (Burley), Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Burle requests that he be granted a commission or warrant to certain justices to hear, try and determine his complaint concerning his gold and silver that his attorney delivered to the exchange at the Tower of London, and the money from which the keeper of the exchange and his lieutenant do not wish to deliver to him because of an error on the delivery of the gold and silver, and he requests justice be done to him as the keeper is not answerable except before the king.
Nature of endorsement
Let the petition be delivered into Chancery, and the chancellor and treasurer are to call to them in Chancery the justices and sergeants of the king, and the keeper of the money, and they are to do speedy justice on the business.
Places mentioned
Thames Street, [London]
London
Tower of London.
People mentioned
John Swyft (Swift), attorney of the petitioner
William de Rothewell (Rothwell), keeper of the Exchange
Richard de Romeseye (Romsey).
Note
The petition dates to c. 1353-1361, as Rothwell was acting as keeper of the exchange by July 1353, and was dead by August 1361 (CCR 1349-54, p.555; CPR 1361-4, p.73). However, the date can probably be more closely defined than this as the petition appears to be in the same hand as SC 8/154/7682, and may therefore date to 1356.
