Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/154/7680
Date
[c. 1324]
Description
Petitioners
Gwilym ap Eynon.
Name(s)
ap Eynon, Gwilym
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Ap Eynon requests that he may have the keeping of the castle in allowance of the costs that he incurred in taking the keeping of the castle following the abandonment of the castle by its previous keeper, as the previous keeper has recovered it by the procurement of the earl of Pembroke.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the justice that if the petitioner be sufficient for the keeping of the castle and finds sufficient surety to serve well and loyally, and answer for what pertains to his office, then he is to deliver it to him, and if he is not, then it is to be given to another.
Places mentioned
Thomas du Chas. . .
Giles de Beuchamp (Beauchamp)
Rhys ap Griffith
Earl of Pembroke.
People mentioned
Cardigan, [Cardiganshire, Wales].
Note
The petition has to date to c. 1324 as the petition refers to the previous keeper of the castle recovering the castle with the aid of the earl of Pembroke, and the earl died in 1324. The reference to the abandonment of the castle presumably refers to the war of 1321-2. Rees' dating of 1328 seems too late (Petitions Relating to Wales, pp.256-7).
