Reference
SC 8/154/7663
Date
[? c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of St Mary's York.
Addressees
King [and Council].
Nature of request
[The petition is damaged and in parts illegible].The abbot and convent request that a writ be sent to the keeper of the Forest to suffer them to use and enjoy [pastures granted to them by the king].
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the keeper of the Forest that he view the charter and do right.
Places mentioned
[York]
Wederhale (Wetheral), [Cumberland].
Note
The petition is dated on the guard to c. 1331 with reference to CChR 1327-41, p.219, with a suggestion that it forms a petition of Wetheral priory. However, the petition is clearly from an abbot, not a prior. The charter roll reference refers to the confirmation of charters at the request of the Abbot of St Mary's, York (the mother house of Wetheral Priory), for a fine made in Cumberland and appearing in the Wetheral register, suggesting that the charters concerned related to Wetheral rather than St Mary's. As such, it seems likely that this petition, though seemingly unconnected with the charter, may well also have come from the Abbot of St Mary's. The handwriting would seem consistent with the period suggested on the guard, and it may have been submitted at the same time as the request for the confirmation. The forest is presumably Inglewood in Cumberland.
