Reference
SC 8/153/7638
Date
[? 1320-? 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Gwilym ap Bledyn (ap Bleddyn).
Name(s)
ap Bledyn (ap Bleddyn), Gwilym
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Bala Devlyn (Bala), [Merioneth, Wales]
Caernarfon, [Caernarfonshire].
Nature of request
Ap Bledyn requests a grant of the frith of Bala Devlyn at the extent in the exchequer of Caernarfon, for his service as an archer during which he was maimed..
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the justice that if the petitioner finds sufficient surety to serve the king loyally and to answer for the extent then he should deliver it to the petitioner. And if not then he should deliver it to another.
Note
The petition is dated by Rees to 1328 on the basis of a related order to pay the petitioner the arrears for a bailiwick that the late king granted him for his service (Petitions Relating to Wales, pp.254-5; CCR 1327-30, p.281). However, the bailiwick does not seem to be the one mentioned in the petition, and the petition's phrasing does not suggest a petition of Edward III but of Edward II, there being no mention of service to the king's father. If so, this petition should perhaps more properly be dated? 1320-? 1327.
