Description

King.
Nature of request
[Petition in 3 parts].1) The people request that the king write to his justices of King's Bench to render judgment against those of Ludinglond as this has long been delayed, and the king will greatly profit by this.2) The people request that the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer having regard . . . between the king's father and the petitioners . . . not to distrain or trouble them for the king's debts.3) They request that it be ordered to Melton that they can have allowance . . . as two letters of the privy seal were burnt in Yarmouth by accident . . .1)
Nature of endorsement
They should wait . . . have a writ of Chancery.2) The statute . . . a writ to the lieutenant of treasurer and barons of the Exchequer to account with them . . . a day in the morrow of St Martin, and they should wait a day.3) It is considered by the council that if Melton has the letter register in his possession that it is good that the letters be renewed if it pleases the king. Afterwards it was attested by Valencia that the king wished the letters to be renewed if the transcript could be found under the date of the previous letters provided that the original letters are destroyed if they are found.
Places mentioned
Great Yarmouth, [Norfolk]
Lothingland, [Suffolk].
People mentioned
William Man
William de Melton
Ademar de Valencia.
Note
The petition is dated to 1307-1312 on the basis of the reference to William Melton presumably in his capacity as keeper of the privy seal (Handbook of Dates, p.93). The guard note dating suggests a date of 1308-1311 in part on the basis of the reference to Melton, but also on a patent toll reference that seems irrelevant to this petition (CPR 1307-13, p.124).
