Date
[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
William Melton, archbishop of York.
Name(s)
Melton, William
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
archbishop of York
Nature of request
Melton requests remedy as although he and his predecessors have had cognizance of pleas made by parties in the Bench and elsewhere concerning land or trespass in the liberties of Beverley and Ripon, he has been denied it in the suit between Hoton and the Hubbards concerning land in Ripon because of the procedure concerning original writs in the liberty.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the justices of the Bench to do justice to the archbishop as ought to be done.
Places mentioned
Beverley, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
Ripon, [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
John [de Hoton], son of Isolde de Hoton
Nicholas Hubard (Hubbard)
Alice [Hubard (Hubbard)], wife of Nicholas Hubbard.
Note
The petition is dated on the guard to c. 1322. The petition is answered in French which suggests a date of 1322 or thereafter when such responses predominate. Archbishop Melton was consecrated in 1317 and died in 1340. It is not clear why the guard date has been selected. The petition may be contemporary with SC 8/153/7612.
