Reference
SC 8/153/7609
Date
[? c. 1335]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of St Mary's, York.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The abbot and convent request remedy and that justice be done to them as Lucy and Lutterington came in the king's ninth year to their vill of Bolam and took their garbe tithes without surety or making payment.
Nature of endorsement
They should go to the common law.
Places mentioned
York
Bolam, [County Durham]
Gainford, [County Durham].
People mentioned
Anthony de Lucy
Walter de Lutteryngton (Lutterington), steward of the king.
Note
The petition is dated on the guard to? c. 1322. The basis of this date is not clear. The petition refers to the taking of the garbe tithes in the king's ninth year. Although Lutterington has not been identified, Anthony de Lucy was a prominent royal servant and regularly occurs in Fraser's Northern Petitions where he is more active and prominent in the late 1320s and 1330s. It seems quite possible that the guard note is erroneous and that the petition refers to Edward III and not Edward II, dating the petition to after 1335, and not 1315. A date of c. 1335 has been opted for.
