Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/153/7608
Date
[? 1324-? 1335]
Description
Petitioners
Gruffydd ap Iorwerth of Newborough; Madog ap Gwilym of Newborough.
Name(s)
ap Iorwerth; ap Gwilym, Gruffydd; Madog
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Newborough, [Anglesey, Wales].
Nature of request
The petitioners request that they be granted by charter that they can hold the tenements that they have purchased in the borough of Newborough without impediment as they are Welsh and have been residing as free burgesses in the town.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the justice of Wales or his lieutenant that he inform himself as to whether it is to the king or anyone else's prejudice if the king agrees to their request, and of all other things touching this business, and certify the king in his Chancery.
Note
The petition has been dated to? 1324-? 1335 on the basis of the separate datings of the petition found on the guard, and by Rees. Rees opted for a dating of? 1324 presumably as this was the date of Edward II's confirmation of the charter (Petitions Relating to Wales, p.254). The guard dating is not explained. The hand of the petition appears correct for the date range, and the petition is answered in French so that it is likely to be after 1322, otherwise neither date is particularly well supported.
