Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/152/7596
Date
[c. 1455]
Description
Petitioners
Richard Plantagenet, duke of York.
Name(s)
Plantagenet, duke of York, Richard
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The duke requests that parliament assent to him having the body of Thorp, and that he may have writs of Chancery so that the lands of Thorp are valued and delivered to him and his executors until a certain sum which Thorp owes to him, and for which he made letters obligatory to the duke, are satisfied.
Nature of endorsement
[On face].The commons assent to this bill.[On dorse].Let it be done as it is requested in the petition.
Places mentioned
Walthamstow, Essex.
People mentioned
Thomas Thorp, late baron of the Exchequer
William Benyngton (Bennington), of Walthamstow, gentleman.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1455 because Thomas Thorp is clearly referred to as 'late one of the barons of the Exchequer', and Thorp was baron from 1452 to Michaelmas 1455 (Sainty, The Judges of England, p.118. The petition has to be after this, and before Thorp served a second term in 1458 which stretched into Edward IV's reign. It seems likely that the petition is contemporary with SC 8/152/7597 sharing identical responses, and if this is the case the petition belongs to the July parliament of 1455 which was prorogued to dates late in 1455 and early 1456.
