Reference
SC 8/152/7593
Date
[1431-1449]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of the church of Holy Trinity, York.
Addressees
Commons of the present parliament.
Nature of request
The prior and convent request that the king and lords spiritual and temporal command the bishop of Lincoln to examine the composition and release made between their predecessors and the parsons of West Rasen concerning the garbe tithes, as the recent release made to Pygot, late parson made for his life has been taken as a bar to the prior and convent. They request that if their right is upheld, that then the composition be held effectual, and the release be void.
Nature of endorsement
[On face].Let this bill be sent to the lords.[On dorse].Let it be done just as it is requested.
Places mentioned
York
West Rasen, Lincolnshire
Lincoln diocese.
People mentioned
Thomas Monkegate, late parson of West Rasen
Thomas Wendroper (Wardroper), late parson of West Rasen
John Pygot, late parson of West Rasen
Thomas Barton, parson of West Rasen
William, bishop of Lincoln.
Note
The petition is dated to 1431-1449 because the petition is clearly of Henry VI's reign, referring to King Henry grandfather of the petitioner, and also refers to William, bishop of Lincoln. There were two bishops of Lincoln called William in Henry VI's reign, William Gray, from 1431 to 1436, and William Alnwick from 1437-1439. Unfortunately the petition does not distinguish between them, and it is difficult to decide from the hand which is more likely.
