[Petition in . . . parts].1) The people request an enquiry and remedy concerning the prior of Coventry's maintenance of false quarrels and impediment to the law.2) They request remedy as Richard de Napton held land in Napton from Robert de Napton, and when he died Robert de Napton entered it but by conspiracy the prior and Chaloner brought and passed an assize of novel disseisin against him.3) They requests remedy as by many threats and grievances and by false pleas has disseised Agnes le Pestour and her son.4) The prior has extorted £20 from Richard Dalby of Coventry for maintaining Agnes le Pestour.5) The Prior has ejected Chilterne from land that he did not wish to sell to the prior, and he can have no legal redress.6) Any man who is bound in a debt to anyone in Coventry of the power of the prior, the prior attaches his goods without process, and the goods cannot be recovered without first making satisfaction to the prior.7) The prior takes fines from many criminals and thieves and assizes to the king's prejudice, and releases some without judgment.8) The prior purchases lands in mortmain to the king's disinheritance because he retains the sheriffs and bailiffs.1)

Concerning the first, this falls under the common ordinance concerning conspirators and other malefactors.2) Concerning the others, saving the last, they should sue in Chancery, and have writs according to their case.3) Concerning the last, let the chancellor be certified of the names of the seizers, and let writs be made in suitable form.

The petition dates to c. 1324 as an order was given to the justices of the Bench and others not to molest or attach John le Chaloner, one of the alleged victims of the prior of Coventry, as the prior had alleged that Chaloner had not gone out of England on the king's service, when he had been to Gascony on the king's service and was shortly due to return there (CCR 1323-7, p.203).
