Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/152/7554
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
John de Warenne, earl de Warenne.
Name(s)
de Warenne, earl de Warenne, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Warenne requests that the escheater remove his hand from and restore the manor and town of Thetford which Cobham held from him for his life, and which was seized on Cobham's death.
Nature of endorsement
Let the escheator be ordered by writ to certify in Chancery the reason for the taking of the manor into the king's hand, and let the king be advised.
Places mentioned
Thetford, Norfolk.
People mentioned
Ralph de Cobeham (Cobham).
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1327 as the king was ordering the escheator to stop 'disquieting' the earl in his possession of Thetford (CCR 1327-30, p.59). As the earl would seem to be in possession in March 1327, and the petition clearly shows that he was not at the time of the petition, it would seem likely that the petition is slightly earlier, perhaps dating to the last year or so of Edward II' reign. The dispute went on until 1331 (CIM 1307-49, no.1160; CCR 1330-3, p.117).
