Description

Nature of request
[This petition is damaged]Ottewell Worsley, esquire, states that the manors of Stockport, Poynton, Bredbury, Beycom, Henbury, Romiley, Woodley, Woodford, and Etchells, in Cheshire, which are of his inheritance, are withheld and occupied by people of great might, so that he has no power to recover them. He asks the King, with the assent of the lords and commons of parliament, to have letters of the privy seal sent to these people, to come before Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, Justice of Cheshire, with the Chief Justices of both benches, to answer concerning the petitioner's claim; and that the Duke of Gloucester might have sufficient power to determine the matter.
Nature of endorsement
The King, with the advice and assent of the lords spiritual and temporal in the present parliament, wills and grants that at the suit of Ottewell Worsley, named in this petition, letters of the privy seal should be sent to the people against whom Ottewell complains in the petition, to appear before the lords of the King's council at such time as they shall be duly warned by the same, to answer all matters contained in the petition, and all other things concerning the same, and to show the title, right and claim which they pretend to have to the manors, lands and tenements specified in the petition; and also to have Ottewell come before the council at the same time. And if they find by this examination any matter of pity or conscience in this, then the lords of the council shall inform the King at the next parliament of all such matters as they have found before then by such examination, so that in the same next parliament such provision might be made for Ottewell as the case of pity and conscience requires.
