Description
Petitioners
Ralph Wadeswyk, esquire.
Name(s)
Wadeswyk, Ralph
Addressees
Commons of parliament.
Nature of request
Ralph Wadeswyk, esquire, states that for his good service to the King and his father, he was made Comptroller of the customs at Bristol, and that he occupied that office until he was expelled by Lord Hungerford, Treasurer of England. Lord Hungerford then granted him the office of Comptroller of the port of Yarmouth, which he held until he was expelled. He was also granted the office of Constable of Scarborough castle, and again this was taken from him. He asks the commons to ask the King and council to grant him another office, or some other suitable reward.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] let it be sent to the lords.[None on dorse]
Places mentioned
France
Bristol
Great Yarmouth, [Norfolk]
Scarborough, [North Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Seigneur de Offemont
[Henry V], King of England
[Walter Hungerford], Lord Hungerford, Treasurer of England
[John Holand, Earl of] Huntingdon.
Note
CPR 1429-1436 p.182 is dated 5 November 1431. Walter Hungerford was Treasurer between March 1426 and February 1432. This petition must date from after 1432, but from the fact that it is in French, not from too long afterwards. Tentatively dated on the guard to 1437, with no further explanation. The petitioner is again appointed controller of customs at Great Yarmouth, a post which he had previously held at pleasure, on 13 June 1443 (CPR 1441-6 p.185), and controller of the search in London on 7 July 1452 (CPR 1446-52) p.562. It also clearly pre-dates Huntingdon's elevation to the dukedom of Exeter in 1444.
