SC 8/150/7461
Date
[c. 1332]
Description
Petitioners
Harsculph de Whitewell.
Name(s)
de Whitewell, Harsculph
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Harsculph de Whitewell states that half a year before he died, Simon de Bereford purchased from one of Harsculph's tenants some tenements in Ketton, which are held of Harsculph in villeinage. Harsculph entered the tenements to save his right, but Simon expelled him by force, and kept him out for the rest of his life. The tenements are now in the King's hand because of Simon's forfeiture. Harsculph petitioned parliament to have them back and was told to sue in King's Bench. He is doing so, but the suit is very expensive for tenements which are worth so little, and Harsculph asks if he might simply have the tenements from the King's hand for a suitable fine.
Nature of endorsement
The business is pending before the King. He is to sue his process elsewhere if he wishes.
Places mentioned
Ketton, Rutland.
People mentioned
Simon de Bereford.
Note
The lands referred to in the petition were committed to John de Ros following Bereford's forfeiture on 22 January 1331 (CFR 1327-37, p.224). The earlier petition asking for their return is SC 8/78/3891: that was probably presented to the parliament of September 1331. This petition is later, and so probably dates from c. 1332.
