Description
Petitioners
John Kemp and others named in the attached schedule, tenants of Waltham Holy Cross.
Name(s)
Kemp, John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
John Kemp and others named in the attached schedule, make various complaints against the Abbot of Waltham. He is too powerful for them to sue him at common law, so they ask the King that the Abbot might be examined on this before him or before such persons as the King should wish to assign, and that justice might be done. Their complaints follow:1) The Abbot has increased the rent and services they owe for their land.2) The Abbot now charges for pasture in Waltham forest, which was previously free.3) The Abbot prevents them from cutting down, carrying away and selling the trees growing on their land, without his permission, contrary to their ancient rights.4) They sued to the King's father on this matter, and had a letter ordering the Abbot to cease these oppressions and to come to an agreement with the tenants. A day was given them on the feast of St Bartholomew in the late King's thirteenth year, but the Abbot lay in wait with armed men and seized and wounded several of the tenants, whose names are on a schedule attached to this petition, imprisoned them at Hertford and indicted them of murder, felony and other crimes.5) The Abbot has imprisoned some of them to find security of the peace, and has attacked and wounded them, and taken their livestock and chattels.6) The Abbot threatens them with being imprisoned and indicted, and also with death.
